Horse Racing Section: Is Anyone Here Aware That Horse Slaughter Is Now Legal In The Usa?

On Friday, November 18, 2011, President Obama signed an Agricultural appropriations bill into law which, among other things, contains language that allows for the refinancing and reauthorization of the federal inspection program for slaughterhouses that process horse meat. This is the first time in 6 years that the funding request for the inspection program has been granted; it was orignally defunded in 2005 by Congress, and has been voted down every year since then until now. I’m interested in knowing what peoples’ responses to the new law are. In my own case, I disagree with it, because I know that it will cost the American taxpayers MILLIONS of dollars once the new plants get built ( currently, at least 8 states have plans to build horse slaughter houses, and there are more in the works) and the inspection program is up and running. When we had the program before, it was costing US taxpayers about 5 million dollars a year- and the companies which owned and ran the slaughter houses ( such as Cavel, which owned the one in Illinois near Chicago) were skimming off profits of up to 5 times that much and more. The money wasn’t going back into the US economy, either. Instead, it was getting sent back to the countries where these slaughter plant owners are based, which meant that it was going to Europe and to Asia. The slaughter plant operators who want to build here now are all foreign owned, foreign based companies- Cavel’s headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium. They exist solely to serve the European and Asian markets, because virtually every US state prohibits the sale of horse meat for human consumption. And instead of requiring these companies to pay licensing fees which would support the federal inspection program, the president and Congress have set up a situation which will force the taxpayers to do it. Yes, the inspection program will create a few new jobs, for sure- but whatever benefit results from that will be more than offset by the new taxes which all of us will pay. That is why I object to the new law. I also object for another reason- primarily because I know that reopening the slaughter plants is NOT the way to solve the problem of horse overpopulation in this country, despite what the president and Congress have been led to think. The only REAL way to solve that problem is to put a stop to the overbreeding of horses which has been going on for decades now. Unless and until that is done, the situation isn’t going to get any better. These are just my thoughts about the new law, mind you. I’m not commenting on the rightness or wrongness of them. As I said, I want to know what people here think of this. Please, no rudeness. This is a civil discussion.
